How are you using Voki and other avatars to enhance student learning?
Good question. I have yet to figure that out as well. Everyone loves playing with them. I have them respond to quotes and I am thinking that I will have the kids record a selected quote into an avatar of their choice. They can play the pre-recorded quote/ Avatar and then in real time explain what it means and why they chose it. Also thinking of using them for character quotes from lit. pieces.
As an introduction for my high school Spanish students to check out my fledgling wiki this past spring, I recorded a message (in Spanish, of course!) to my Voki (which is placed in the easy-to-find sidebar), and students had to come into class the next day (1) having visited my wiki; (2) having found my Voki; (3) having figured out how to hear it say something; and (4) having written down on a piece of paper what my Voki said. The students who had the message (mostly) correct received extra credit.
I hope to use this activity again this school year. In the fall, the messages will start out being more basic; but as the year progresses, they will be longer / more complicated. I hope that by planting these 'extra credit' seeds on my wiki, it'll encourage more of my students to visit my wiki and use it as the resource for which it is intended.
Anne,
I love your idea and I plan to incorporate something similar for my students. I agree this is a great way to get students started with wikis before getting too complicated. I teach history and commenting on famous, or not so famous, quotations will surely get discussions started. Thanks for the super idea!
