I downloaded the Jing application to create the video for Week 2 Homework. I can record video just fine, however, I don't get any audio. I read the FAQ for Jing and it said to make sure my microphone is enabled, which it is. Still no audio. Now what?
Hi Lori,
When you click on the video button to begin recording, take a close look at the other buttons. Is there an "X" over the microphone? See image. If so, click on it to "unmute."
You might also check your audio input. Jing looks for the default audio input device. Usually that's the microphone. Check your Control Panel (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac) and make sure that the default audio input device is your microphone.
Jing is a great tool! I like to use it to get a screen shot of a and label it. Then I can use that in a web conference or documentation.
I've never used the audio portion of Jing, but did a small presentation to my colleagues that resulted in a potential purchase of Jing Pro. While this gets worked out at an administrative level (ITS must approve all software purchases, etc.), I am practicing my videography. I have learned a lot about how to create effective Jing videos from watching other videos, but still don't always know how to indicate what I feel is important just by pointing with the mouse.
I am most excited, though, about being able to upload to YouTube, which will make me have to create some nice quality videos, as I don't want to put my name on something that looks awful.
Best of luck working out your questions. The JING Faq page may also help answer your questions or troubleshoot with ya.
Best,
Amy - Librarian
Thanks, Dawn that was exactly what the problem was!
Lori,
I'm glad it worked for you. Good luck with your videos.
OK.. now that I can make my video, I have encountered another problem. Jing creates a .swf file, that cannot be uploaded to PBWorks. What is the easiest way to convert this to an acceptable format? I tried a couple of converters and has poor results.

Here's another free web-based app for editing videos in case anyone would like to explore another application:
Patricia (Mentor)
Hi Lori,
I hesitate to put this out there in case the mentors would suggest another way and I'm sure these things will get touched on next week. Ok, well I can't help myself.
You might consider setting up your Screencast account and hold your Jing flash files there. You can then get the “embed code” to paste in your wiki Source. You don't need to convert your flash file. In fact, it's a great file type for sharing video on the Internet.
I've embedded my Jing flash a little differently, only because I didn't know any better. I uploaded it to the wiki and then used an "embed object" code on my page. A little bit of web building background is beneficial if you choose to do it this way. I resized the height and width of my movie in proportion. I usually switch from IE to Firefox when I mess with video code because IE doesn't show the edit window properly.
THANK YOU! You have been so helpful!

I also had problems embedding my screencast using the insert plugin tool and had to play with the code. I wonder if it's just my computer. I'm working on a Mac, maybe I'll move over to my PC. It'd be nice if it would work...
I love Jing! I usually create Jings when I am introducing my students to a new software program or skill. I then post it to the class wiki. This way, students who were absent can watch the video and not fall behind!
Hello Lori
I've uploaded .swf files before, and then just linked to them on the preferred page.
A good, free, file converter is FormatFactory: www.formatoz.com

Greetings fellow educators and summer campers
Another great thread going on here...let me add my two cents' worth. If you need to convert files, try zamzar.com - I have used it to convert Real player files and other audio files to MP3 - a file extension recognized by my district.
I, personally, have not had opportunity to check out Jing but it sounds awesome. Perhaps I will have some time to look at it while on vacation....
Later on,
Thank you all for the suggestions on audio and Jing. I had tried to create a tutorial earlier in the year - many things going on, not enough time to trouble-shoot for ME! Used Camtasia instead, which worked. This is an incentive to go back and try it again with Jing.

It is really strange. I copied the code from your page and tried to embed it and it did nothing. Then I suspected that the code was broken and tried to embed it into a blog- and it worked! So it seems to be something to do with PBWorks, but I can't figure out what.
I have a little problem with Jing.
I could share one of the videos I made but most of the time, I get an error message
. (There was a problem connecting to the Internet. Your capture was not shared but is in your history.) The videos are under 5 minutes so I wonder if there is a size or time-to-upload limit. I haven't been able to find this information yet. Anybody with the answer? Thanks.
