I've never made a video or slide show.
Please advise me about the best programs to use. I assume that I pay for these programs, so I want to use the ones that give the best quality for the $$.

Hi Janice,
Don't buy anthing!
There are free programs to help you make videos and slideshows and I'm pretty sure they're already on your computer.  If you're a Mac user, you have iPhoto and iMovie.  If Windows, you have PhotoStory (awesome!) and MovieMaker.
But because we're in the middle of PBwiki camp, I'm guessing you mean to create movies and slideshows to embed in your wiki.
A great little video creator on the web is Animoto (sample) (literacy samples).  You might want to get yourself registered at the Animoto for Education site right away because they take some time checking your school address before you can access your teacher account.  Teachers are not limited to the 30 second video like general users.
For slideshows, I really like to use Google Docs Presentations (sample).  I'm sure you'll be hearing in the next couple of weeks about all the wonderful ways to include Google Docs in your wiki (surveys, forms and assessments are incredible).  I have also used Jing to turn my PowerPoint slides into a flash video file. (large sample)
Another great reason to use the web based tools is because they are accessible to all platforms.  I have come across some embedded media in wikis that I could not see because they were platform specific.  We need to be writing for a "global community."
There are many free tools available to us, I think the key is to find the ones that you're most comfortable with and the ones that are allowed through school filters.
I'm sure we'll be hearing more in the next couple weeks about additional tools and how we can use them in our wikis.

In the past I have used iPhoto and Animoto to create my slideshows. iPhoto is a good option for schools since most schools seem to have Macs in the classrooms and labs. Animoto was fun but if you use their free option, you are limited to the length and number of photos in the slideshow.

Though after Week 1's assignment and viewing Mr. Boyer's Class Wiki , I am going to look into using BubbleShare for the creation of some future slideshows. I really liked the way they look on Mr. Boyer's wiki but I will need to spend a bit more time playing with the product to make a final choice.

Ritam,
I also like Bubbleshare - I'm actually uploading all my Med Cruise pics on it right now.  Unfortunately, it doesn't come through our district filter.  Just an FYI - if you register with Animoto as a teacher, your length is not limited.  I think they added the
Animoto for Education about 5 months ago.  "Unlimited videos for you and your students."

You have received some great advice ad I've made note of their input.  Adding to the mix, try Slideshow Pro and Memories on the Web (by CodeJam).  Both are also freeware.

Main thing - Have fun!

I also like slide.com- it is so easy and you do not have to log in to create a slideshow and embed it in your blog or wiki.

I use keynote and turn my presentations into an ipod movie. Can a .mov file be uploaded to a wiki page?

Janice, my favorite 2.0 web tool is VoiceThread.  It only costs teachers a one-time $10 fee.  Once I have an album of pictures on i-Photo I want to upload to the Internet, I like to use Google's Picasa Web Albums Uploader.  This works for quick uploading.  Once on the Picasa site, they load quickly to VoiceThread for easy-to-do voice overs.  Videos may also be uploaded to VoiceThread with ease.  My students absolutely LOVE the "collaboration factor" of VoiceThread.  I hope you have some time to check it out.  :0)

AuthorStream is another excellent web 2.0 application.

I've used VoiceThread but have not been asked to pay a fee. What applications does the fee allow?

I have also used Slideshare as an option -- uploading PowerPoint and adding audio files.  Easy to use and free.  http://www.slideshare.net/

Hi Janice --

Another site that may be helpful is ScreenToaster.  http://www.screentoaster.com/  It is similar to Jing in that it is a screen capture program.  You can upload your files onto their server and then share them.

For screencasts is also an easy tool Screencast http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/create?step=setup. I like that you don't have to register here, just click create and go for it

Thanks for the tip on Animoto for Educators. I didn't realize that was available.

Re: Animoto for Educators.  I had to wait a few days for their confirmation e-mail.  In the meantime, you can use a regular account to create videos.

It was suggested by a fellow camper that I center the media programs that I posted in my Week Two wiki page. (Don't know if this link will work or not from this site.) I was able to center the video that I created and uploaded but not the slide show that I made at Bubble Share. I tried using the properties option at Bubble Share and using the centering option on the wiki page - neither worked. Any other suggestiongs to try?

Thanks, Trish

I am keen to use a program to upload a slide show or video for week 2. ( I am southern hemisphere so I think I have today to do this??!! There are so many choices..I am overwhelmed with where to start. Has anyone listed all the options like in a 'simplybox' and added pros and cons...?Or is this a silly question.

To Cookie: Not sure I saw an answer, but yes a .mov can be uploaded onto PB works, you can also send it to YouTube and embed it.

In addition to Animoto, another favorite tool for slide shows is to use  Picasa Web Albums (by Google). Upload your pictures, they give you the embedd code and then you can make a cool slideshow. Here's a link to an example of a set of Internet Research Slides we use in my class and below is the embedded show.

You can even make slideshows into movies by using the Picasa application, (available for both Mac and PC)

Enjoy
Stuart
