Assessing Learning & Team-work using Rubrics

In the last few years, I have become a firm believer in the constructive use of Rubrics.   While teaching fully online courses, rubrics were invaluable as a tool for grading online discussions as well as clearly maping my expectations for learners' posting content & online posting behavior.

This is my 3rd semester using a semester-long course wiki project.   Based on my own learning curve, I have a much clearer idea of what learners are capable of and what are my expectations.   This semester I have been essentially using two rubrics, one that evaluates the first draft of their wiki essay and evaluates their collaboration with team-members.  As we shifted into editing, I have introduced an additional rubric.

I am curious to know about the experiences of others using rubrics and how this has helped/hindered your learners.

I am also eager to learn of any scholarship you can point me towards that addresses ways to assess wikis and learners mastery of content or team-work skills.

Thanks Kimm for starting this topic.

While I have not actively used rubrics in any of the wiki projects, I will discuss this with my acads for an upcoming one and observe how we can use rubrics in the wiki.

I am curious as to how your rubrics are applied in your course. Do the students access the rubrics online or offline? Any description of how you apply of rubrics in your student's learning process will be useful.

Thought you might be interested in seeing these rubrics I found while researching resources for a wiki workshop I recently offered:

Thanks for starting this discussion. Rubrics are a big part of our curriculum plan, Since I'm new to wikis I do not have any rubrics to share but am glad that those of you who have been using wikis will share the ones you've constructed. It will give me a starting spot.

Thanks for sharing these rubrics!  Rubrics are such a help in evaluating and quantifying student work.  I've never meet a rubric I didn't like.

Well... not really...
There is more to life than rubrics, but they sure come in handy!

Thanks for sharing these rubrics - I am eager to start using them with my 3rd graders - we are always looking for appropriate " assessment" tools for our students to buy into to assist their learning.  Thanks again.

Thank you for sharing this. It is always nice to learn from others. I will surely be using this in my courses after summer break.

Here are a few more samples of rubrics.  I used these last year in class.

Assignment: Produce an Electronic Anthology

1. 5 Poems with biography for each poet
2. Analytical Paragraph about the Poems
3. Five Original
4. Poem about New Orleans that you will export into MovieMaker and make a movie.

This was my 2nd attempt to get them to post something on a wiki/blog page.  My focus for this assignment was to make sure that they actually posted the items onto their pages.  They had many deadlines so I knew that most of them had completed the work, I wanted to make sure that they posted it.  This rubric is simple so that they could easily see what I was looking for with this assignment.

Grading Rubric

Included 5 poems?                                          25

Included 5 bios?                                             25

Analyze 5 poems?                                           50

Included 4 original poems?                             20

Included video?                                              20

I have attached another assignment below.

Here are a few more rubrics. There are three rubrics on this site: Digital Story, Engagement, Reflection and Evaluation, and Wiki Grading Rubric:

Sorry, just realized I posted this one before. I'm in the process of organizing and thought I hadn't shared this one before.  smile

Thank you for sharing these rubric ideas!  I'd like to add the Rubistar website, which allows you to create custom rubrics as well as providing templates for various types of projects.
